The free engines don't require investments in publicity, as the name states, they are totally free. Never the less, they work at their best when the website is rich in content. But, you should be aware that with free search engines you are not guaranteed any results.
A second type of search engine is the "Pay For Inclusion" engine. These engines work when you pay a regular fee in a regular basis, thus, it will assure you traffic. And, as many state, money has power. So, when you are already part of the search results, you may pay additional money in order to place yourself in an important position.
Last, we have the "Pay Per Click" engines. This type of engine works relating keywords to ads that promote your site. Every time someone searches for the keyword, your ad will be displayed in the results. Payment is done at a regular basis, but may be different each time, depending on the number of clicks people make on your ad. Payment per click can go from 1 cent to over 10 dollars.
